The Camden Creative Arts Jazz band open their 2013 Jazz Band season last night
at Shawnee High School beating out the oncoming snow storm that hit the area. Great , great job by the Shawnee Jazz Band and band parents for putting on a great festival and getting everyone out before the snow. The Creative Arts Jazz Band received a GOLD rating for their performance and won best section awards for the trombone and saxophone sections Rising star Nala Johnson won a outstanding soloist award for her performance on trumpet and vocals.Congratulations on a great start to the season. Next up , the band will be traveling to Rockville MD to compete at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival High School Big Band and Combo competitions. All the best in Rockville.

Back in September the band applied to to the
Swing Central Jazz Festival which is part of the Savannah Music Festival. They had to submit a audition recording in order to be selected as one of the finalist. Here is part of the annoucment: SWING CENTRAL JAZZ ANNOUNCES TWELVE HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BANDS SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN 2013 SAVANNAH MUSIC FESTIVAL Savannah, Georgia – Twelve of the nation’s top high school jazz bands have been selected to participate in the eighth annual SWING CENTRAL JAZZ High School Jazz Band Competition & Workshop, an event produced by the Savannah Music Festival (SMF). Pianist/composer Marcus Roberts leads a group of 19 esteemed musicians/educators as the Associate Artistic Director, along with Associate Director Jim Ketch, trumpet player and Director of Jazz Studies at UNC Chapel Hill. Participating students work with jazz masters across three days, perform in showcases on Savannah’s River Street, play in competition rounds, and attend a variety of SMF performances during their stay, which takes place from March 27 through 29, 2013. “It was difficult process to select our twelve high school bands from a very strong group of applicants. We look forward to hosting talented young musicians from as far away as California while welcoming first-time participants from the Savannah Arts Academy,” remarks Associate Artistic Director Marcus Roberts. “We will have a great group of world-class musicians working with these bands in team settings during the festival. I’m looking forward to it.” In 2013, the nationally recognized SWING CENTRAL JAZZ program features the following bands going head-to-head for $13,000 in cash awards: Agoura High School Studio Jazz Band from Agoura High School (Agoura Hills, CA) Agoura High School Jazz “A” from Agoura High School (Agoura Hills, CA) Charleston School of the Arts Jazz from Charleston School of the Arts (Charleston, SC) Camden Creative Arts Jazz Band from Creative Arts Morgan Village Academy (Camden, NJ) Denver School of the Arts Jazz Workshop Orchestra from Denver School of the Arts (Denver, CO) Downers Grove South High School Jazz Ensemble from Downers Grove South High School (Downers Grove, IL) Grissom High School “A” Jazz Band from Grissom High School (Huntsville, AL) Lower Moreland High School Jazz Ensemble from Lower Moreland High School (Huntingdon Valley, PA) Overton High School Blue Jazz Ensemble from Overton High School (Memphis, TN) Savannah Arts Academy Jazz Band One from Savannah Arts Academy (Savannah, GA) Tarpon Springs High School Jazz Ensemble I from Tarpon Springs High School (Tarpon Springs, FL) The Lovett School Jazz Ensemble from The Lovett School (Atlanta, GA) As part of SWING CENTRAL JAZZ, each participating band receives a visit from a clinician in February to help them prepare for the event. On March 28, all bands perform in public showcases at Rousakis Plaza on River Street. On March 29, select combos perform on Reynolds Square. Competition rounds take place all day on March 29 at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts, and are webcasted for family and friends who aren’t able to make the trip to Savannah. Each band plays three selections: “Billie’s Bounce” composed by Charlie Parker and arr. by clinician Paul McKee, “Such Sweet Thunder” composed by Duke Ellington and arr. by Billy Strayhorn and “Oh!” composed and arr. by Ernie Watkins. Congratulations to the 2012 Camden Creative Arts Jazz Band for being the runner up for the fourth year in a row in the NJAJE Division 1 State Finals. It may have been 5 in a row if not for the fact that the band was in New Orleans in 2011 and skipped the NJAJE Division 1 Finals last year. This years finish particularly satisfying with the following scores of:
Judge A: 97 Judge B:79 Judge C: 99 for a total of 275 to finish 3 points behind this years State Champion Bridgewater-Raritan Monday Jazz Band. Arnetta Johnson won the top soloist of the Finals for her performance and Daniel Spearman also took home a outstanding soloist award. They received a rating of superior with honors and won best trumpet and rhythm section awards. Arnetta Johnson and Daniel Spearman won outstanding soloist awards.On Wednesday the band traveled up to the Sawmill Cafe in Seaside Park N.J. to compete in The Music Spectacular where they won best trombone and rhythm section awards and Arnetta Johnson won a outstanding solo award. The band was named best overall band for the festival.The best part of the week was our first annual jazz festival featuring Eastern High School, Lower Merion High School and Pennsbury High school Jazz Bands in competition. We also had a exhibition from Dr. Brimm Medical Arts High School's jazz band. Our very special guest from Ohio was the Oberlin Jazz Ensemble who also provided a small clinic for all the instrumental students as well as a great performance on the stage. What am I talking about, All the bands were great!!!!

Last night at Unionville High School in Kennett Square PA, the top 11 bands from the Cavalcade circuit put on a great night of Jazz. It was the second year in a row that Camden Creative Arts Jazz Band was named the Dick Scott Award winner. The rhythm section won a best section award and Arnetta Johnson was named Outstanding soloist. Next Friday we will host our 1st Annual Jazz Festival featuring the Oberlin Jazz Ensemble from Ohio. Also the award winning bands from Lower Merion (PA) High School, Pennsbury (PA) High School and Eastern High School. There also will be a performance from the Brimm Medical Arts High School Jazz Combo. It's going to be a great night of music. On Saturday night, the band will be in Millville NJ to compete in the Cavalcade of Bands New Jersey Regional Championship at Lakeside Middle School. The Little Jazz Giants will be opening up the show at 6:30pm and Camden Creative Arts Jazz Band will be on stage about 9:50pm.
The Camden Creative Arts Jazz Band represented the city of Camden, their school, all the east coast jazz bands and family and friends very well at the Next Generation Jazz Festival at the Monterey Jazz Festival in California. They finished tied for fourth among 12 finalist. Great job guys. Arnetta Johnson was named the top soloist which came with a 50% scholarship for the Berklee Collage of Music Summer program.The band did make quite of few fans while at the festival due to their performance which included the 2012 Artist in Residence Ambrose Akinmusire. Congratulations band, we are so proud of you. Next up is the Cavalcade of Bands Yankee Championship at Unionville High School on April 14th. Competition starts at 6pm with the band scheduled to be on stage at about 9:20pm. Best of luck.
Camden Creative Arts Jazz Band completed the regular jazz season this weekend while traveling with the Little Jazz Giants to Shalick High School on Friday and Kingsway High School on Saturday. It was the first time out for The Little Jazz Giants this season and they received a excellent rating for their performance at Shalick. The Creative Arts Jazz Band received a rating of superior while winning all the section awards. Best soloist awards went to Daniel Spearman and Arnetta Johnson. At the Kingsway Jazz Festival the Little Jazz Giants receive a middle school rating of outstanding and Lavar Concepcion won a honorable mention solo award. Congrats. The high school band got a rating of superior and won best section awards in trumpets and rhythm. Charles Bell won a honorable mention solo award and outstanding solo awards went to Arnetta Johnson and Daniel Spearman. Great job guys. Next week the Camden Creative Arts Jazz Band will be in Monterey Ca. to compete in the Next Generation Jazz Festival. All the best in Monterey.
This past Friday and Saturday night the Camden Creative Arts Jazz Band competed in the Lower Merion High School and Pennsbury High School's Jazz festivals. Friday at Lower Merion, the band received a rating of superior for their performance as well best section awards for the rhythm and trombone sections. Arnetta Johnson won a outstanding soloist award with Daniel Spearman wining a honorable mention award for his solo. The band finished off a very busy week at the Pennsbury High School Jazz Festival by receiving a rating of superior with the trumpet section being named best trumpets for the night. A outstanding soloist award was given to Lakeim Shaw for his performance. Congrats Lakeim. The evening's best soloist and winner of $100 (CHA-CHING!!!) went to Arnetta Johnson, congratulations Arnetta. This week the band will travel to Centerton N.J. to compete in the Schalick Jazz Festival with a performance time of about 8:05pm. Also The Little Jazz Giants will be performing at Schalick. They open up the festival at 6:00pm. On Saturday, both bands will travel to Swedsboro N.J. where The Little Jazz Giants will be on stage at about 5:14pm and the Camden Creative Arts Jazz Band up on stage at about 8:43pm. The band traveled to Steinert High School in Hamilton N.J. to compete in the NJAJE State Preliminaries and received a Gold Rating for their performance. The Trombone section won a best section award and Arnetta Johnson and Daniel Spearman won outstanding solo awards. Great job .
